About Us
Third Great Farm is a small, family-run regenerative farm in Pecatonica, Illinois, rooted in the belief that food and medicine should come from healthy soil, intentional stewardship, and hands-on expertise. We raise heritage sheep, produce lamb, and create wool goods from our flock, while also cultivating a diverse selection of functional mushrooms.

Our integrated approach spans from spore to finished extract, allowing us to produce Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, and Cordyceps tinctures entirely on-farm. With backgrounds in clinical herbalism, mushroom cultivation, extraction, and regenerative agriculture, our team merges traditional knowledge with modern craft.

Third Great Farm is known for its original SARE-funded work with outdoor Reishi production, where we developed a closed-loop, living-soil mushroom system unique to our region. Alongside fungi, our sheep play an essential role in the farm’s ecology, contributing fiber, fertility, and food in a way that supports both land and livelihood.

From lamb to wool rugs, from tinctures to teaching, we operate with a commitment to transparency, ecological integrity, and whole-systems thinking. Everything we offer is grown, raised, or crafted right here — by us, on this land.
Practices
At Third Great Farm, our practices reflect a commitment to regenerative agriculture, full-system integration, and small-batch craftsmanship. We grow and raise everything with the belief that resilience and quality come from working with natural processes rather than against them.

Mushroom Cultivation

All of our mushrooms begin from spore, allowing us to maintain full genetic control and true traceability.

Reishi is cultivated using our SARE-developed closed-loop, regenerative outdoor system, incorporating living soil, natural airflow, minimal plastic, and composted wood substrates.

Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, and Cordyceps are grown in our controlled indoor environment, allowing for clean, consistent year-round production using our own cultures and fruiting blocks.
We handle every stage — culture, spawn, substrate, fruiting, extraction, bottling — on-farm for complete vertical integration.

Extraction & Herbal Production

As clinical herbalists and experienced extract makers, we emphasize precision, purity, and consistency.

Tinctures are produced using heat, agitation, and fine filtration with lab-grade equipment.

Batches are small, intentionally crafted, and free of fillers or outsourced materials.

Herbal and fungal extracts are prepared to support clarity, focus, balance, rest, and resilience in a compliant, non-medical way.

Sheep & Fiber

Our flock of sheep contributes wool, grazing power, and fertility to the land.

We produce lamb, raised on pasture with holistic care.

Wool is cleaned and transformed into rugs, coasters, and household goods, allowing us to use the full value of each fleece with minimal waste.

The sheep rotate through our fields to build soil structure, improve forage systems, and create a closed nutrient cycle.

Regeneration & Closed-Loop Thinking

Across the farm, we aim to:

Reduce external inputs

Reuse and compost organic materials on-site

Integrate livestock, fungi, and plants into mutually supportive cycles

Prioritize transparency, traceability, and ecological literacy

From fungi to fibers, everything we produce reflects the same philosophy: grow with intention, steward with care, and keep every system as connected as possible.
